What Is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is an examination of the cervix, vagina and vulva using a special magnifying device. It is especially useful after high-risk HPV positivity or abnormal smear results.
When Is It Recommended?
Colposcopy may be recommended for abnormal smear results, high-risk HPV, suspicious cervical appearance or findings that require closer follow-up.
- HPV positivity
- Abnormal smear result
- Evaluation of cervical lesions
Procedure
Colposcopy is usually brief. If needed, a biopsy may be taken from a suspicious area. LEEP may be considered for diagnosis and treatment when higher-grade cervical cell changes are detected.
